Open source is enjoyable - it's a strange world where people share what they think - openly. It's free speech and you won't always get that from closed source. It's often foreign for engineers who are working alone, in well funded startups, or in established, proven, but traditional companies.
Email doesn't convey tone very well - I think question was addressed, and corrected you where you were possibly mistaken on a couple issues. That's GOOD here. I'm new to Hadoop, but not mailing lists - and this one's pretty good at responding to technical questions, and even helping provide solutions.
