The jira HADOOP-1700 has a design document for appends. Once this design is discussed and approved by the hadoop-community, the implementation would start. My guess is that it would probably be early 2008 when this feature might get implemented. Please feel free to contribute any code that you might have to jump-start the implementation of this feature.
