FYI, I wrote to them for this matter and I got an answer:
the modification has been done around mid-2009, but in
the commercial version of these fonts... But the OHA,
the people delivering the public version, have still not
integrated (or delivered) the changes yet, according to
Steve Kuhlman (ascendercorp.com <mailto:steve.kuhl...@ascendercorp.com>).

This issue was resolved and delivered to the OHA about six months ago. This
issue has been resolved in all the Droid fonts we offer on our web commerce
site as well.

Ubuntu is providing DroidSans.ttf version 1.00 build 112.
Could you tell me precisely in which build it has been corrected?
I would need this information to request Canonical to integrate this minimum
build version into the next Ubuntu release.
