            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

First up: the bailout bill passes!

Today President Bush signed off on the $700 billion Wall St. bailout package
after the House changed course and passed the bill in a new 263-171 vote. But
is it too little, too late? We'll talk to Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) and Rep.
Brian Bilbray (R-CA) to see if the final bill will be enough to help the
failing economy.

Then, Sarah survives the VP debate! Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. Joe Biden took
the stage last night in the most highly anticipated vice presidential debate in
16 years. But will big ratings translate into votes for either party? And Palin
envisions flexibility and authority in the office of the vice president, but is
that guaranteed by the constitution? Ron Brownstein, author of "The Second
Civil War" and Rick Hertzberg, Senior Editor of The New Yorker, will be on hand
to give us their take.

Later, was Biden's focused attack on Sen. John McCain enough to secure his
ticket's success? Has Palin managed to repair her image with the public? Will
the VP debate make a difference for the general election? We'll look at the new
state of '08 race with MSNBC Political Analyst Pat Buchanan and Democratic
Strategist Bob Shrum.

Plus, on the Hardball Sideshow, a new Internet ad that uses reverse psychology
and some big Hollywood names to promote voter registration.

Then in the Politics Fix - McCain is pulling back his campaign in the
battleground state of Michigan with just weeks to go until the election. With
the race nearly neck-in-neck, is McCain conceding a crucial state to his rival?
MSNBC Political Analyst Michelle Bernard and WashingtonPost.com's Chris
Cillizza will discuss the move and it's consequences for both parties.

Be sure to tune into Hardball tonight at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET.
