If you're having trouble compiling under OS X, it may be that the BSD subsystem is not installed. One way to check is to look in /Library/Receipts, like this:

~:$ cd /Library/Receipts
/Library/Receipts:$ file BSD.pkg
BSD.pkg: directory
/Library/Receipts:$ 

But don't expect compilers to work unchanged, the binary format is different under OS X.
