I recently recommended this to a friend in similar circumstances

It utilizes power over Ethernet which can be convenient. He seems
happy with the camera itself after preliminary testing. Many seem
to recommend use of Blue Iris software, rather than the native
software with these cameras, and would cost your friend about $50
for multiple cameas so that'd be an additional cost.

to then run the wire to a video capture card on a dedicated computer.
As far as choosing the camera, I would think one primary factor would be
ruggedness against outdoor elements to avoid premature camera failure, and
secondly optical quality.
Any ideas or security companies that might be receptive to a phone call for
advice would be welcome.
