The discussion of kashrut in Crete reminded me of a story a Greek
Orthodox coworker told me. Her family came from a village in Crete, and
she had visited there a couple of times. She said that she has Jewish
cousins, but none who practiced Judaism because there was no organized
Jewish life. She said that just before the Nazis came, the Jewish
children were divided among the Christian families. Since they all, Jews
and non-Jews, dark haired and dark eyed, the children blended in. The
parents were deported and never returned, but all the children survived.
Unfortunately, their descendents will be Christian.
