I believe the book you are looking for is The Aleph-Bet Storybook, 
long out of print, but still wonderful stories. It's a 1946 
copyright. The author is Deborah Pessin.

Was it The Aleph-Bet Story Book, by Deborah Pessin?  I think it was 
published by JPS.  I think the cover of the one we had was 
reddish-brown (or brownish-red?).
