The Israel Center for Digital Information Services (MALMAD) is
pleased to announce the availability of a new user interface to the
Israel Union List (ULI). This interface is based on the open source
VUFIND system used by many libraries throughout the world. It
includes a modern graphic user interface which allows the user to
narrow down search results by different facets in an easy and convenient way.
This interface is in addition to the old ("classic") interface which
will continue to be available for those who prefer it.
In the classic ULI each library's records appear separately, so if an
item is found in 20 different libraries a search would present all 20
records. In the new interface an attempt is made to combine identical
records and present one only with indication of all holding libraries
and links to each local catalog. Of course, differences in cataloging
may still cause the same item to appear more than once.

The ULI database itself will continue to be maintained in the
ALEPH-500 system and services to catalogers (z39.50 and direct) will
remain unchanged. The new VUFIND interface uses an independent MYSQL
database which will be updated weekly from the ALEPH one, usually on
Sunday night.
We hope users will enjoy the enhancements in the new interface and
