*Job Summary*

The University of Michigan Library is one of the world’s largest academic

preserves, and shares the scholarly and cultural record in all existing and

This cataloger role is responsible for copy and original cataloging of
materials in multiple formats in Hebrew characters, English, and any Western
 European language in accordance with local and national standards. A
successful applicant who meets the required qualifications will receive
training in the necessary cataloging skills that are needed. This role
applies knowledge of the Hebrew and Yiddish languages as well as Judaism,
Jewish culture and civilization, and Israel to create and update
bibliographic records that are shared across the world. The role involves
extensive work with online catalogs, databases, and web resources. This
role is involved with culturally diverse faculty, students and staff to
achieve objectives and nimbly respond to new challenges in a dynamic
environment.



This role jointly reports to the Technical Services Coordinator in
International Studies and the Head of Resource Description and Maintenance
in Technical Services. Approximately half of the role’s effort will be in
support of Judaica cataloging in International Studies and half will be in
support of Western European language cataloging in Technical Services.

*Responsibilities*


   - Create original or substantially edit bibliographic records to full
   level, including classification and subject analysis, utilizing and
   applying RDA <http://www.rda-rsc.org/content/about-rda> and AACR2
   <http://www.aacr2.org/about.html>metadata metadata schemas and the MARC
   <https://www.loc.gov/marc/> content standard, while adhering to local
   collection procedures and established production standards.
   - Process tangible and electronic materials including, but not limited
   to, monographs, serials, microforms, scores, video and board games, visual
   and electronic items for general and Special Collections in Hebrew,
   Yiddish, English or any WesternEuropean language.
   - Transliterate Hebrew and Yiddish according to the American Library
   Association-Library of Congress (ALA-LC) Romanization Tables
   <http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/roman.html> and add or edit Hebrew
   script in records representing materials in Hebrew or Yiddish.
   - Assist with receipt of Israeli blanket order and gifts.
   - Share responsibility for maintenance of the Judaica workflow and its
   component parts.
   - As needed, cover additional and evolving services or functions related
   to enhancing the discovery and delivery of library content.
   - Maintain current knowledge of new and emerging cataloging standards.

*Required Qualifications*


   - Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of relevant experience
   and education.
   - Extensive knowledge of Hebrew; oral and written, including the ability
   to translate and transliterate Hebrew.
   - Reading knowledge of Yiddish.
   - Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work
   collaboratively, either independently or as part of a team.
   - Ability to work with multiple teams and balance priorities.
   - Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
   - Ability to understand diverse perspectives and acknowledge the
   significance of differences and complexities in backgrounds, cultures,
   values and viewpoints as the foundation for an inclusive environment.

*Desired Qualifications*


   - Reading knowledge of an additional non-English, Western European
   language.

This position may be filled using an FLSA exempt or non-exempt designation.
