NEW AFFILIATION WITH OFEQ INSTITUTE CELEBRATES RELEASE OF TORAT KOHANIM AND ITS COMMENTATORS PROJECT AND NEW RABBENU TAM’S COMMENTARY ON THE TORAH
Koren Publishers is proud to announce a new affiliation with Ofeq Institute. Ofeq Institute is dedicated to the research and discovery of original classical Hebrew medieval manuscripts and their publication in critical, annotated editions. The mandate of the Institute constantly reflects the ongoing developments of the social capital of the Jewish people, in the fostering of Jewish connectedness globally, through the renaissance of Jewish learning and its propagation. Ofeq Institute devotes itself to tannaitic literature and post-Talmudic writings. These classical works – some previously unknown, others inaccurately published – are deciphered from original manuscripts and annotated by an expert staff of Torah scholars who also add source references, extensive footnotes, scholarly introductions and indices. In a relatively short time, Ofeq has published dozens of reputable classics, all of them distinguished by excellent, uncompromising editing and by aesthetically pleasant layouts. Founded by Rabbi Avraham Shoshana, who serves as the chief editor of all its publications, Ofeq Institute was amongst the first to be granted permission to publish choice material from the world-famous Baron Ginzburg collection in the Russia State Library in Moscow. To list but a few of these works: two versions of Mesillat Yesharim, Dialogue and Thematic versions, fully annotated in Hebrew, and in a bi-lingual English-Hebrew edition, and newly discovered Geonic Responsa; Tosafot R. Isaac b. Samuel of Dampierre and Early Tosafists on Tractate Shabbat (3 volumes). Ofeq is continuing to make history by releasing a previously undiscovered manuscript: Hidushin al HaTorah L’Rabbenu Tam (Novellae on the Torah by Rabbenu Tam, 1171, Romerupt), ISBN 978-1-881255-17-8. This is a unique and early Tosafot commentary on the Torah, published for the first time from ms Moscow Guenzburg 362/8, accompanied by a scholarly introduction, erudite notes and commentary, and detailed indices. Under the terms of this new affiliation, Koren will be the exclusive distributor of Ofeq’s scholarly works around the world. “We are delighted to help bring this extraordinary output to the wider public,” said Matthew Miller, Koren’s publisher. “These lost treasures are sure to enrich anew the spiritual and intellectual culture of the Jewish people.” Koren Publishers, headquartered in Jerusalem, was founded in 1962 by Eliyahu Koren. It is widely recognized for the production of the Koren Tanakh, the first Hebrew Tanakh produced by Jews in Eretz Yisrael in 500 years. Since 2009, Koren has expanded its publications to include some of the most essential resources for every library including the Koren Talmud Bavli, the Sacks Siddur, various editions of Tehillim, books on Parshat HaShavua and more.
