Provenance research of Jewish ceremonial objects looted during the Second World
War

Leo Baeck Institute

Wednesday March 22, 2017

11-12:30 p.m.

Please join the Leo Baeck Institute for an informal lecture and discussion led
by Julie-Marthe Cohen of the Jewish Historical Museum Amsterdam, who will
discuss her work developing a provenance methodology for the Claims Conference.

On request of the Claims Conference, Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek and Julie-Marthe
Cohen are working on a manual that presents a methodology on how to do
provenance research that aims at establishing 1) pre-war ownership of a
displaced Judaica object (provenance research) and 2) the present location of
objects of which ownership is known (quovadience research). Julie-Marthe Cohen
will briefly outline the content of the handbook and will give some examples
that will show how the use of archival sources may lead to the identification
of missing or displaced ceremonial objects.

Julie-Marthe Cohen is curator at the Jewish Historical Museum Amsterdam. She
has been engaged in tracing the fate of looted Jewish ceremonial objects since
2000 when she started researching the war history of the Jewish Historical
Museum. Together with Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek she edited Neglected Witnesses.
The Fate of Jewish Ceremonial Objects During the Second World War and After,
which was published in 2011.

Please RSVP to David Brown dbr...@lbi.cjh.org<mailto:dbr...@lbi.cjh.org> at the
Leo Baeck Institute if you are interested in attending.
