Dear Claire (if I may), When I was training to be a reference librarian under a longtime reference librarian pro, one of the helpful pieces of advice I received from my colleague was that part of the reference librarian's (or archivist's) role is to be a bit of a psychologist or social worker. When dealing regularly with the public, you come to learn that not every library or archives patron actually knows precisely what he or she is searching for. This is part of the librarian's or archivist's task: to help better formulate just what the patron/researcher is interested in. As for the matter of working with materials that may be of a sensitive or even confidential nature -- an issue that frequently presents itself especially in archival settings -- there is often an institutional policy in place designed for handling those types of materials or collections. For example, patrons may be required to sign some sort of confidentiality form pertaining to what may or may not be included in a publication. This is certainly not uncommon when dealing with ego documents such as correspondence, diaries, memoirs, or testimonies.
