Shalom u'vracha, Due to the widespread impact of the recent epidemic on youth's educational performance, might AJL make an exception on reviewing a book, published right before the outbreak of Covid, that shares the insights of a groundbreaking alternative high school established in Jerusalem more than twenty-five years ago? The book, *Not At Risk, Education as a Work of Heart*, recently published in Hebrew, as well, is dedicated to youth who do not reach their potential or, possibly, find their place in the standard classroom setting. Marion Stein, a retired member of your Association who has moved to our community in Israel, has suggested that Jewish librarians have the opportunity to learn about this potentially valuable book. The following is a brief intro to our story, which Koren Publishers are prepared to forward in its original.
L. Frank Baum hadn’t merely imagined the atypical figures of the tin man, scarecrow and timid lion of Wizard of Oz fame. In their respective yearning for a heart, brain and courage, these iconic characters represent prototypes of what are today referred to as “youth at risk.” To address these needs, the book *Not At Risk - Education as a Work of Heart,* published by Menorah Books of Koren Publishers, tells the story of an academic Jerusalem high school that could be likened to the role of heroic Dorothy. She invites these unhappy characters along a path towards the magical discovery of what they think they’ve lost - what they long to regain. This book details an unusual educational journey towards self-realization that was developed at the Mercaz L’Mida Dati Learning Center, better known as Meled, which has been transforming lives of youths and restoring families for more than twenty-five years. Kindly advise if and to whom a copy of the book could be sent.
