For designers/artists who want to make cool stuff without learning a textual programming language, I totally disagree. Look at Apple Shake, SideFX Houdini, Werkzeug, Shader FX, Unreal 3, or even National Instruments Labview, and more... They all have a (albeit very limited) visual programming language. People get real "procedural" work done with these tools. Almost every 3D movie uses at least one of tools I mentioned.
