Marlene:

If Iskandariya is  based on the Arabic form of Alexander (as in Alexander the Great), wouldn't it be more likely that the Iskandariya you're seeing on your records is a reference to Alexandria, Egypt?

My two cents.

I noticed several records published in Askandaryah which have been coded ua for Egypt. According to Wikipedia, they were published in Iraq.

Iskandariya (إسكندرية, also given as Iskandariyah, Iskanderiyah, Iskanderiya, Iskanderiyeh or Sikandariyeh or Al Askandariyah) is an ancient city in central Iraq, one of a number of towns in the Near East named after Alexander the Great (Iskander in Arabic). It is largely populated by Sunni Muslims, and is located about 25 miles (40 km) south of Baghdad, near the Euphrates River.
