PAS 'needs more time to discuss proposal'
KUALA LUMPUR: PAS decided to defer its plan to admit
non-Muslims as associate members because it needs more
time to discuss the proposal.
Party president Datuk Fadzil Noor said the party
needed feedback from its members.
"We feel it is better to discuss it openly at the PAS
Muktamar (general assembly) in Terengganu next
month,'' he said.
He said PAS was considering the matter because it has
received "thousands of enquiries'' from non-Muslims to
join the party.
"Another reason is that we are fighting the Government
as an opposition front and non-Muslims can join either
Keadilan or DAP,'' he added.
MCA leaders, meanwhile, said PAS' decision proved that
it could not represent a multi-ethnic society.
MCA secretary-general Datuk Dr Ting Chew Peh said that
in any case, non-Muslims were not interested in
becoming associate members with no voting rights.
He said the proposal, first brought up during last
year's general election, was merely an election
gimmick to woo non-Muslim votes.
PJ Selatan MP Donald Lim Siang Chai said the decision
was expected because PAS' plan to include non-Muslims
into its fold contradicted its policy.
Seremban MP Datuk Hon Choon Kim expressed similar
sentiments, adding that "PAS has from the very
beginning not given any position to non-Muslims
