Death toll from KL clashes rises to 6

KUALA LUMPUR -- The death toll from neighbourhood clashes in several areas in
Petaling Jaya since Thursday has risen to six with the death of an Indian man,
the official Bernama news agency reported, quoting Selangor chief police officer
Nik Ismail Nik Yusuf as saying.

The man died at about 10 am from stab wounds sustained on Saturday.

Police have detained 23 more suspects in connection with the clashes, apparently
between Indians and Malays, bringing the total number of suspects detained so
far to
177.

On Sunday night, police seized 34 more weapons including iron pipes, knives,
machetes,
folding knives, molotov cocktails, parang and a tub of petrol, police chief Nik
Ismail
said.

Malaysia's record of preserving racial harmony has been good since the 1969
Malay-Chinese riots in which almost 200 people died.

The bloodletting in Petaling Jaya, apparently sparked by a trivial neighbourhood
quarrel,
left many people in shock.

Politicians maintained the clashes were not originally racially motivated.

'It began when a Malay man tried to settle a fight involving a group of
Indians,' Home
Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, was quoted by Monday's Star
newspaper as saying.

'This Malay man tried to solve it and then he was also involved in the fight. He
was also
hit and that was what started the fight in a particular area.'

An earlier incident in which a Malay wedding party blocked a road as a group of
Indians tried to pass through the area
also heated tempers, he said.

The Minister said that race relations overall were still good but called for
more programmes and social gatherings to
improve understanding. -- AFP, AFX
