Kulai-JB toll issue drags on

JOHOR BARU: Toll for the Kulai-Johor Baru Highway will not be reduced or
abolished until the Cabinet makes a decision.
State Works and Public Utilities Committee chairman Adam Abdul Hamid said a
Cabinet Memorandum on the matter was still being studied as any reduction or
abolishment of toll charges would have financial implications for the
Government and the highway concessionaires.
Adam was replying to Datuk Khoo Che Wat (BN - Kulai) who asked about the
Cabinet decision on the matter which had dragged on for 18 years since Works
Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu announced that toll on the highway would
be discontinued once the Ayer Hitam-Johor Baru Highway was completed.
Speaking to newsmen later, Adam said he could not tell when or how long the
study would be completed.
"Whether the toll will
be reduced or totally abo-
lished will also depend on the study.
"Of course, we would like to see a reduction or even a total abolishment of
toll because motorists from Kulai heading towards Senai or Johor Baru have
no choice but to use the highway.
"If the Federal Government decides that the toll must remain, then an
alternative route must be provided. There is none in this case," he said.
