I went ahead and did make make install and everything seems to have gone just fine. I haven't manually run the tests in make check to see if they still fail, but the make and installation completed without errors and simple searches show that the system is installed and running.
As a side note, I'm having generally very good experiences with Panther. There are a few oddities but the new features are compelling enough to make up for them, and a whole lot more. I basically updated for the new Finder and Expos� (in addition to the improved Windows compatibility since I work in a Windows environment). I'm a happy consumer at this point...
