I would like to have Bug #122 resolved
[http://bugs.xfree86.org/show_bug.cgi?id=122]. I am ready to
contribute and actually accomplish all the work that is required.
However, since it concerns keyboard mapping, we must discuss the
solution first.
The US Intl keyboard as defined when no locale is set and on the
windows platform allows one to generate a <c> with cedilla (ç)
with the following key combination: <apostrophe> <c>.
However, when I started to set the locale on RH 9 to en_US.UTF-8,
en_CA.UTF-8 or fr_CA.UTF-8, <apostrophe> <c> doesn't work anymore.
The combination outputs spaces which is useless. Someone in the bug
report does mention that it outputs a <c> with an acute accent, but
this is not my case. With a 104 US keyboard, I actually have no clue
how to generate a <c> with cedilla. If anybody can tell me how,
please provide the instructions (with the real key labels please).
Now all the locales defined in the file "locale.dir" uses en_US.UTF-8
for their keyboard mapping. Since I believe that the mapping for <c>
cedilla is wrong for at least the en_US.UTF-8, en_CA.UTF-8,
fr_CA.UTF-8 and according to another fellow, pt_BR.UTF-8, I think the
following steps should be done:
1) We should rename the current en_US.UTF-8 to intl_old.UTF-8, have
all the other locales point to it until someone complains about them.
2) Create a new intl.UTF-8 directory which is essentially the same as the
old en_US.UTF-8, but with the <apostrophe> <c> fixed to produce a
<c> with cedilla and have the en_US.UTF-8, en_CA.UTF-8, fr_CA.UTF-8 and
pt_BR.UTF-8 locales point to it.
I am a french canadian, so as a french speaking person, I can confirm
that <c> with acute does not exist in the french language. We should
at a minimum change the key maping for fr_CA.UTF-8, and as far as I
can tell, apply the fix for all fr_*.UTF-8. Since english canadians
are prone to write in french too (french & english are the two
official languages in Canada), they two need this fix. Both
en_CA.UTF-8 and fr_CA.UTF-8 locale should have the same keymapping.
When no locale is set or set to "C", <apostrophe> <c> produce <c> with
cedilla This is also the standard on the MS Windows platform, Thus, I
believe that en_US.UTF-8 should do the same.
As for pt_BR.UTF-8, I cannot speak about portugease, but since someone
reported it in the bug report, I guess the fix should also be done for
that locale.
Please comment and express your opinions. I would like this issue to be
resolved.
BTW, I am totally new to this i18n issue and with XFree86, thus bear with
me if I making bad assumptions or mistakes.
