Workshops on the Application of Palaeotsunami Science to Tsunami Mitigation in
Indonesia

November 8 - 20 2008, Indonesia

Application Deadline: 27 October 2008Email or Fax: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: +62-22-2504593

The 2004 Aceh tsunami, seemingly without precedent on shores it overran, shows
that written history is too short to show how often tsunamis occur and how
large they can be. Palaeotsunami science, the hunt for geological evidence of
past tsunamis, is one of the best ways to gain an understanding of prehistoric
earthquake/tsunami occurrence. The hunt for geological evidence of past
tsunamis has become an international method for assessing tsunami hazards. As
they do this coastal field work, tsunami geologists often talk with tsunami
survivors who provide tsunami-safety lessons that can reach the public through
public-safety booklets, videos, and websites.

A series of two-day workshops on "The Application of Palaeotsunami Science to
Tsunami Mitigation" will be held in various Indonesian cities from November 7
to November 20. The schedule of workshops is as follows:

Bandung November 8 - 9

Makassar November 10 - 11

Yogyakarta November 15 - 16

Purwokerto November 17 - 18

Semarang November 19 - 20

These workshops will inaugurate a project intended to strengthen the Indonesian
use of tsunami geology for assessment and awareness of Indonesia's tsunami
hazards. Funded by the Australian Agency for International Development
(AusAID), this project will be run by Lembaga Ilmu Pengatahuan Indonesia (LIPI)
and Geoscience Australia (GA). The workshops are intended primarily for Earth
scientists.

Selected participants from the November workshops will be invited to
participate in a laboratory course in Australia (February 2009) and a
palaeotsunami field course in Indonesia (April 2009). Selection criteria will
include demonstrated ability in stratigraphy, sedimentology, palaeoecology,
geomorphology, or neotectonics; communication skills in Indonesian languages
and in English; and a commitment to using Earth science to increase public
safety.
