To those of you who helped me with this problem earlier: thank you. After a bout of illness, I resumed working on our transfer and eventually -- with the help of the sysadmin at the server site -- got it working.
Morals of the story: 1) Google is your friend, but he can be a confusing friend. 2) The guy on the other end of the pipe can help you a lot.
