Ketika lagu ini sukses besar dibawakan oleh The Mindbenders pada tahun 1966, kedua wanita ini masih remaja. Waktu itu, Toni Wine berusia 19 tahun, dan Carole Sager pun tak jauh beda. Namun sukses ini patut diperoleh Wine & Sager, mengingat mereka telah menulis lagu sejak kecil. Sager telah mulai menulis berbagai puisi sejak masih kanak-kanak, dan mulai menulis lagu-lagu saat menjadi siswi di High School of Music and Art. Tadinya Wine & Sager menawarkan “A groovy kind of love” kepada penyanyi wanita Lesley Gore, tetapi tidak mendapat ijin dari pihak manajemen Gore. Dan “A groovy kind of love” pun direkam oleh Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles. Namun“A groovy kind of love” baru menjadi internasional best-seller setelah dinyanyikan The Mindbenders.   “A groovy kind of love” kembali populer 23 tahun kemudian, ketika Phil Collins menyanyikannya sebagai lagu soundtrack film “Buster” di tahun 1989.
