Gary,
We spoke on the phone back in May about DCE and AFS issues at Argonne.
Since then we have been receiving what I would call negative comments
from the community about the future of AFS.
Today there has been quite a few complaints on the [EMAIL PROTECTED]
list and your name has come up in a number of them. The best I can tell,
all of your customers are complaining that you are pulling the rug
out from under them. And from my prospective
If nothing else, you should read what's on the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list.
This downward trend for AFS appears to have started shortly after the final
Decorum, when IBM took over, canceled future Decorum meetings, canceled the
Kerberos 5 support for AFS, and has moved the maintenance to India.
These actions by IBM appear to be at odds with *ALL* of your customers
and appear to be an attempt to squish AFS in favor of DFS. Most sites
have at least looked at DFS and have decided in favor of AFS. We have both,
DFS never made it nor never will make it to production.
If IBM is not willing to support AFS as it should be, please consider
some other options for the loyal AFS community at large:
o Make the source code publicly available. OSF did this with DCE.
o Sell/give AFS to someone who will maintain it. CMU would be a good
choice.
As one note on the mailing list said:
"IMHO, AFS is a work of genius and has a deservedly large and loyal
customer base due because AFS is so useful, robust and reliable.
The excellent Transarc AFS product support group in Pittsburgh
has also made a key contribution to AFS customer satisfaction
as have Transarc Education."
