Damn, yes - effectively, gnus-signature-separator is a variable defined in `gnus-art.el'. Its value is ("^-- $" "^-- *$") when I first glanced at it, I saw both of them were prefixed with the "-- " and didn't notice the * would let the space be omitted, and then when I copied and pasted from the article buffer to double-check, Gnus put the correct thing - a "-- " - in the past buffer! But now when I do C-u g, I see a weird separator of "- -- ". I don't know what's going on. I think I should completely give up trying to help people with Gnus though! I do honestly try to check what I say before I say it but my batting average in this group so far has been deleteriously execrable, for which I apologize. At least I've learned that copying and pasting the text from the normal view of the article body may not actually accurately reflect the as-posted article body. It may also help to explain confusion from Merciadri.
