Modern knowledge was not made in a few European ‘centres of calculus’
and then dispensed to the rest of the world as science and theory.
Instead, for centuries many centres of calculus and debate both far
from and loosely connected to ‘Europe’ have produced new knowledge
and theory. Such centres have at times also made epistemological
critiques of ‘European’ theory. At the same time, knowing subjects
have moved around, connecting courts and centres of calculus in often
surprising ways, producing ‘entangled’ or ‘connected’ knowledges,
occasionally on a global scale.

At this LAGLOBAL workshop, leading scholars in the emerging field of
history of knowledge will explore the ways and means by which New
World or Ibero-American and Caribbean centres and subjects came to
shape modern practices of theory and critique.

We are particularly interested in papers that present case studies of
centres or sites (universities, missions, courts, libraries,
academies, institutes, museums, salons, cafes), practices (printing,
collecting, drawing, recording, writing, experimenting, teaching,
performing, pirating, selling), and/or individuals (cosmographers,
polymaths, historians, scientists, artisans, etc.), that make
connections with or indeed shape wider trends and debates in Europe,
Africa and Asia.

Please submit your paper title, a 200-word abstract, and 3-page CV to
Jose Guevara at jose.guev...@postgrad.sas.ac.uk as soon as possible
but no later than October 15, 2017.
