Call for Publications Theme: Expressing Hatred Subtitle: The Political Dimension of Expressives Publication: Daimon: Revista Internacional de Filosofía Date: No. 84 (September–December 2021) Deadline: 31.5.2021 __________________________________________________ (Versión española abajo) Daimon: Revista Internacional de Filosofía invites contributions for its special issue “Expressing Hatred: The Political Dimension of Expressives” (no. 84, September-December 2021). When we talk about expressives, we refer to those expressions of natural language that are used to communicate a certain attitude. If it is the potential for political use of expressives that we are interested in, slurs (Potts 2007; Hom 2008; Camp 2013; Jeshion 2013; Cepollaro and Stojanovic 2016) and dogwhistles (Saul 2018) are especially relevant. Slurs are insults that are especifically directed against a certain social group. As such, these expressions are highly harmful, but not too subtle. Dogwhistles, on the contrary, are not generally perceived as tools that communicate an attitude, which makes them potentially more dangerous. For instance, using expressions like “inner city” can mobilize certain attitudes in the audience against black people, but in such a way that at least some part of it will ignore that this is happening. Inasmuch as the attitudes communicated by slurs and dogwhistles are directed against a social group, we can understand them as expressing implicit biases (Brownstein 2019). The aim of this issue of Daimon will be to explore the meaning and social consequences of using expressions such as slurs and dogwhistles. The monograph is promoted by the Regional Government of Andalusia’s excellence research project P18-FR-2907, of the Department of Philosophy I (University of Granada), and will be completed with submissions that will be subjected to blind peer review. The issue will accept contributions in any of Daimon’s publication languages. Besides submissions from philosophy, it will also admit contributions from linguistics and cognitive sciences. A special section entitled “Expressing Hatred: The Political Dimension of Expressives” and intended for the submission of original papers about this topic has been opened on the journal’s webpage. The deadline for the submission of original manuscripts is May 31, 2021. Expressions of interest in submitting a manuscript, including a provisional title and a brief abstract, will be appreciated. We will consider not only works in the format of Papers, but also Critical Notes and Book Reviews. El número 84 (septiembre – diciembre 2021) estará dedicado a los expresivos. Llamamos “expresivos” a aquellas expresiones del lenguaje natural que se utilizan para comunicar una cierta actitud. Si lo que nos interesa de los expresivos es su potencial para el uso político, son especialmente relevantes expresiones como los slurs (Potts 2007; Hom 2008; Camp 2013; Jeshion 2013; Cepollaro y Stojanovic 2016) y los dogwhistles (Saul 2018). Los slurs son insultos que se dirigen específicamente a un determinado grupo social. Como tales, estas expresiones son sumamente dañinas, pero poco sutiles. Los dogwhistles, por el contrario, no son generalmente percibidos como herramientas que comuniquen una actitud, lo que los hace potencialmente más peligrosos. Por ejemplo, utilizar expresiones como “PER” puede movilizar ciertas actitudes contra andaluces y extremeños en el auditorio, pero de forma tal que al menos una parte del mismo ignorará que esto está ocurriendo. En la medida en que las actitudes comunicadas por slurs y dogwhistles están dirigidas contra un grupo social, podemos entender que expresan sesgos (Brownstein 2019). El objetivo de este número de Daimon será explorar el significado y las consecuencias sociales de emplear expresiones como los slurs y los dogwhistles. El grupo promotor del monográfico será el proyecto de investigación de excelencia de la Junta de Andalucía P18-FR-2907, del Departamento de Filosofía I de la Universidad de Granada y admitirá aportaciones de otras personas; todas las aportaciones serán sometidas a revisión ciega por pares. El número recibirá contribuciones en cualquiera de los idiomas aceptados por Daimon. Además de contribuciones provenientes de la filosofía, también se aceptarán contribuciones provenientes de la lingüística y las ciencias cognitivas. En la página electrónica de la revista se ha abierto una sección especial titulada “Expressing Hatred: The Political Dimension of Expressives” destinada al envío de trabajos originales sobre este tema. El plazo de envío de originales para su evaluación y posible publicación finalizará el día 31 de mayo de 2021.
