To avoid the fate of murder victim Terri Schiavo many people are turning to so-called "living wills". What most people don't realize is that the "default setting" (so to speak) in some such wills is to include food and water as "medical treatments" that can be withheld, rather than as basic necessities of life. For example, California's living will automatically presumes that you want food and water taken away, unless you specify otherwise. The following directives are specific to each state in the US and have the "default setting" established to preserve life. Although not Islamic living wills, they include sections that can be adapted to include our wishes as well, for example, that only zabiha food be provided for nutrition. A strong bit of advice: consult a Muslim probate attorney in your state.
