Wa Alaykum as-Salaam,
I believe there can be better accomodations in some masaajid for the sisters. But tearing down the barrier, just goes way too far and is part of a concerted effort to subvert Islam and modify it according to Kaafir, Western standards.
Such efforts should - and must - be opposed. This is the challenge for us Muslims in the West who want to truly practice Islam, to meet this modernist onslaught.
As for the claims of Khaled Abou El Fadl, I would not take them serious at all, since he is one of the leading proponents of this modernist Islam. He has made many statements in the past which meet the criteria of Kufr according to Islamic Law, although I don't know if Takfeer has been made against him.
