I've looked at it. It's a pretty elaborate library, too. As a quick
start I found out about a tool in ExtractImages.java (in PDFBox) that
has code that can be easily modified to check for colour space of
images rather than writing them to disk.

As for the margin checking I don't have a solution yet. A PDF
processor providing XML information, as suggested by Leonard, might be
the quickest path to that one. I've taken a look at pdftohtml
(http://pdftohtml.sourceforge.net/), which also creates xml output,
but I'm not too happy with it yet. Also I'll dig deeper into pdfbox.

I have to note that iText as it is was already of tremendous help to
