        Why?   What purpose would that serve?

        Ah - I see now.

        in that case, I would recommend that you pick a specific 
glyph from the font that can be easily noticed as being incorrect. 
Esp. since even if .notdef worked, it's usually empty/blank.

        Except that, as Paulo noted, .notdef behavior in layout is 
different than in rendering.
