No, you should see PDF as the FINAL format.
Show the book chapter to whoever gave you the assignment,
and tell him or her that the design is flawed.
If he or she doesn't agree: refuse the assignment.

I could give you an alternative, but whoever sees that code should say:
"that's some mighty crappy code!"
So I'd rather not share it, because that would be bad taste
(and it wouldn't work for all PDFs).
