there is a big 'ideological'mismatch between working in the world of
'nodes in a document' and a Java API like iText. A FOP implementation or
tools like FlyingSaucer are a bridge for this gap. They handle XML /
HTML and map it to calls to iText. So dtmo you should take advantage of
the work that's already done. To some extend you are working with iText
as these tools are usually build on top of iText ;-)
