You probably assume that a page is a white rectangle.
That's not the case: there's no rectangle path followed by a fill 
operator that paints the page white.
I think your page just consists of text, and nothing more (no opaque 
rectangle in the background).

If there's no opaque rectangle in the background, you shouldn't expect 
that changing the opacity would work.
If you really want to cover content, you'll need to draw a white rectangle.
That's not really elegant, but that seems to be your requirement.
