That error message is normal. As the Xv code starts up
it opens the yuv playback device which logs the fact
that it will not work in the messages file.
At the moment this is all it does and it does not fail
the open call (the return is commented out). However X
copes either way. This has nothing to do with your
inability to login. 

I've had odd problems in the past when i've filled a
disk up which took me a while to discover.
