I bet your kernel is compiled with gcc-3.3, but you are trying to
compile ivtv with gcc-4.0, so you are right that is what is causing your
problem.
You could upgrade to linux-image-2.6.12, or compile ivtv with:
make CC=gcc-3.3

make CC=gcc-3.3 did the trick and you are correct, my kernel was built
with gcc-3.3. (Its still debian stock)
