Since many of those giving feedback for ivtv are using mythtv to check
out the sound levels, some of the problems reported might really be due
to problems within the initialization interface with mythtv. I know that
this is a purely empirical form of problem analysis, but there are no
problems that I see with the 1.3.9 ivtv module. I thought that some
positive news might be a welcome change.

To clarify,

1) Is the set_ivtv_params script mythtv-specific or Knoppmyth specific?
It certainly makes a series of ivtvctl calls that will impact testing
and operation.

I check it on my system (and occassionally modify it) when I install a
new ivtv build along with reviewing my module parameters to keep them
inline with the current requirements.

there IS no set_ivtv_params within the rpms for mythtv supplied for mandrake (or mandriva), and "mplayer /dev/video" wouldn't work correctly if the modules.conf were set up improperly (as I stated in my original post). Using Mplayer to display the output from the card is the most direct way to test the functioning of the card and ivtv module itself, which is why I chose that testing method. The IVTV entries within the syslog show that this is the desired module, for the desired kernel, and that it is starting up correctly.

Some additional subtle problems that might creep in here are:
1) location of the ivtv module in /lib/modules
2) proper setup of the kernel
3) subtle problems attributable to other libraries, and the architecture

I eliminated those by:
1) rebuilding all mythtv rpms from scratch
2) getting fresh kernel source, rebuilding the kernel, and verifying that the kernel .config file was correctly setup
3) check the depmod output in /lib/modules to verify that the version of ivtv was the one intended
4) repeating this process for many versions of the ivtv modules to track when and where problems occurred
2) I believe the versions of ivtv currently being tested are 0.3.8 and
0.3.9 (not 1.3.8 and 1.3.9).

You are very correct to point out the error about the versions. That was an oversight in the message that I should have caught.
