The main reason would be so that you have consistent
volume control throughout MythTV without requiring two
sets of buttons to do it.

In order to get things working, you need to loop the
audio from the PVR-350 into your sound card, and then
the PCM mixer doesn't seem to control the output
volume (at least not on my sound card, a SoundBlaster
Live 5.1). My only choices are then:
1. Control the Line-In volume (which does adjust the
volume) somehow, (which means that I have two sets of
volume controls). This, at the moment, means calling
an external program (i.e. a shell script)
2. Use the Master volume level. This makes the MythTV
settings inconsistent with other applications (i.e.
xine).

At the moment, I'm using the xv output, and it's
working, but it does seem to smear sometimes in fast
motion scenes.

I have thought about trying to patch MythTV to address
the deficiency, but that's a lot of work to make
everything consistent.
