Tom,

Let's start over. In Windows 7, the simplest or most reliable way to invoke
Narrator is to press Windows key+r to bring up the "run" dialog, then type
narrator. Wait a second or two and Narrator starts speaking. To close Narrator,
tab twice to "Exit." Press spacebar, then alt-y to confirm.

Jim:

I just tried Windows key plus enter to launch Narrator, but couldn't get it to
come up.

Perhaps I should clarify that I'm using Windows 7 and Jaws 17 here.

Can you do this with Jaws active?

I tried both with and without Jaws, but had no luck.

What am I doing wrong?

Press Windows key+Enter, yes this is a toggle keystroke, press it once to turn
Narrator on, press it again to turn narrator off.

Hello.

I have conflicting instructions here regarding how to start Windows Narrator.

One set of instructions says hit the Windows key plus enter simultaneously;
this supposedly is a toggle to turn Narrator on and off.

Another set of instructions I have here says to hit the windows key plus the
letter U. to open the access center; and then press Alt N to launch narrator.

Can someone tell me which of these instructions are accurate?

Thanks as always!

Tom,
I just press the spacebar once and the password box comes up.
If, nothing happens on start up, I switch to narrator and it gets the job done.

Thanks, Mike.

I appreciate these additional instructions, and will save for future reference,
should the problem recur.

Hi

Unfortunately, the items in the start-up folder are only started after the user
has logged in. So putting an icon for JAWS in the start-up folder will not
provide speech on the log-in screen. Now that JAWS is speaking on the log-in
screen, , you could do the following to help if you have the JAWS starting
problem again.

1. Start the computer and wait until JAWS starts talking on the log-in screen.
2. Press tab until you get to the password for your user id, counting the
number of times you had to press tab

if JAWS again does not speak on the log-in screen, after waiting for a while
when you turn the computer on, press tab the number of times you counted, enter
your password and press enter. This should get you logged in.

When you're logged in, you can always start JAWS by pressing Windows-key and
type JAWS?? and press enter. ?? is the version of JAWS you want to start 17,
18, etc..

That's what I believe I did last night.

Kind of stumbled upon the solution, but at least it seems to have worked.

Another method if you are still having the startup problem would be to take a
JAWS icon and place it in the startup folder, IE the same place where speak
drop box and things like that go to fire up on system boot.

Mike:

It turns out that, for reasons I can't explain, my computer reverted back to
jaws 16, which I also have on the machine.

Now that I'm back in Jaws 17, Outlook is performing as it should.

I still need to trouble-shoot the log-on screen startup issue, but these steps
you gave me should help.

I'll keep the steps handy, and continue work on the startup screen issue in the
morning.

Thank you for your quick response.

Hi Tom,

You can try the following for your 1st issue, but I can't help with your 2nd
issue:
Note: The steps below were performed running Windows 7 & JAWS versions 15 thru
18. These steps won't work with Windows 8 or 10, & why they won't is below my
steps.
For those of you that have Jaws set to start at the Windows log-in screen, but
it doesn't, this might work for you. I looked in, msconfig, & found that JAWS
Freedom Scientific wasn't at the top of the list on the Start-up Page / Tab, so
this is what I did.
1. Press, Windows key + R, to open the run dialog.
2. Type, *msconfig*, without the stars, & press enter.
3. Press, control + tab, until you get to the, Start-up Page / Tab.
4. I arrowed down the list, & unchecked any items above, JAWS Freedom
Scientific, on the Start-up Page / Tab.
Note: Only uncheck the items / programs above JAWS Freedom Scientific, &
nothing else. Pay close attention to what you uncheck because you are going to
recheck these items / programs shortly.
5. Tab to the, Okay, button, press the spacebar, & tab 1 time to, Restart, &
press enter to restart your computer.
6. Once your computer is booted up repeat steps 1 thru 3, & you will notice
that JAWS Freedom Scientific is now at the top of the list.
7. Now, arrow down the list of items / programs on the Start-up Page / Tab,
check the items / programs that you unchecked previously, & repeat step #5.
Now Jaws should start on the Windows log-in screen when your computer starts.
I did the above steps on 4 different computers, both desktop & lattop, &I'm not
going to say it works everytime, but it sure works most of the time, which I
can say is a damn site better than before I followed the above steps.
Take care.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Need Help With Two Jaws Issues

Hello, everyone.

Today, I suddenly have been experiencing two Jaws issues. Any help with either
of them would be appreciated.

I am using Jaws 17 professional, and Windows 7 here.

1. When I re-boot my computer after a shut-down, Jaws no longer speaks at the
log-in screen. I seem to recall that someone else had this issue the other
day, but don't recall the solution. I have checked "automatically start Jaws
at the log-on screen" in basic Jaws options, and also have told Jaws to always
start after the log-on screen for me as the main user.
Currently, the only way I can start Jaws is via sighted assistance.

And

2. I am using Outlook 2016 to manage both my University and personal g-mail
accounts. In both accounts, Jaws is now giving me a very expanded list view in
my message folders, rather than the short list view I have been accustomed to.
The long message list view gives me many more details than I'd like. The
abbreviated list view starts with an unread or read status notification, which
is very helpful. I'm not sure how to get the shorter list view back.
Currently, the folder pane is set to normal, the reading pain is set to off,
and the to do bar is off.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

This is very frustrating, since I don't know what caused these sudden changes
in Jaws behavior.

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan
