Thank you Adrian, I missed the point that Judy is using 2003. One thing I noticed about the new line and paragraph indication setting is that JAWS automatically changes the setting to indicate "when reading" when the word marks are showing. If at that point you change the JAWS indication to "off" the marks could still be showing but won't be indicated. However, you are quite right, in Word 2003 using CTRL with shift and 8 to turn of the marks should cause the marks not to be showing or indicated in the document.

The CTRL Shift 8 command was Word's way to show or hide paragraph marks for anyone whether or not using JAWS. In Word 2013 the keystroke doesn't work. Instead, Alt followed by H followed by 8 is the way marks are shown or hidden in Word 2013. Whether or not JAWS indicates the marks is controlled by the New Lines and paragraph indication setting.
