Hi Lenny,

The first place to check is the recycle bin, if it's there, highlight the
icon, open the context menu, & choose restore. If it's not, read the
various notes on how to get desktop icons back from the notes below.

From: Carlos
1. Go to the desktop.
2. Press Control+Space to make sure no items are selected.
3. Press the Applications key to activate the context menu.
4. Select "Personalize".
5. Tab to where it says "Change desktop icons" and press Enter.
6. Check the "Computer" checkbox.
7. Select the "OK" button to save the settings.

does the computer icon show on the desktop? if it was you can explorer the
entire hard drive if you want.
if it is not on the desktop you can put it there by right mouse clicking on
a blank spot on the desktop.
then arrow to personalizations.
then go to change icons. there there several icons you can check to put them
on the desktop.
like computer and internet explorer and your account folder. this one will
have your folders for music, documents, videos downloads etc.
once you have the computer icon on the desktop you can explorer the entire
disk drive flash drive or cd rom disk you may have connected.
or use the shortcut key windows e to open the list of drives.
windows r will open the run edit box.

when you have gone into a folder press alt left arrow to go back a folder to
get out of it.

How do u find a blank space on the desktop?

From: Gene
In Windows 7, do the following:
While on the desktop, press home. Then execute the command control space.
This proceeddure unselects anything that may have been selected. That is
the equivalent of finding a blank space on the desktop.

In Windows xp, you can simply press f5. In Vista, you can try f5, I don't
know if it works. It does not work in Windows 7, thus the other procedure
I gave.
Opening the context menu is the same as right clicking. Once nothing is
selected, open the context menu and follow Netbat's instructions.

Thanks. this old dog learned something new.
you are right. f5 does not work with windows 7. i tried this first but it
did not work.
also you do not have to press home as long as you are on the desktop.
control space works no matter which icon you are on.

Actually, for most related procedures in Windows7 you don't need to do
any of these old "don't highlight anything on the desktop" types of
actions. All that is over with windows 7.

Remember, the Start menu search box is always, always your best
friend. The original poster wanted to modify the placing of default
icons on his desktop EG: network, recycle bin, Computer, etc.
1. Press windows key to open Start menu search box
2. type the following and press enter:
desktop icons
Note: You will want to insure you press enter on the following: "Show
or hide common icons on the desktop"
3. Tab to a type of list view where you can down arrow and check and
uncheck the items you do not want showing on the desktop.
4. Tab to Ok and press enter.
5. repeat this process to undo your changes if you don't like them.

Its time to stop thinking Windows XP when trying to solve problems on
new operating systems such as Windows7 and on.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.
Arguing with a woman is like reading a software license agreement. In the
end you have to ignore everything, & click I agree.
