I use the laptop layout all the time regardless of whether I'm using a full
desktop keyboard or not. Having the caps lock act as a jaws modifier is
always nice.

I have never grown accustomed to the laptop keyboard, probably never will,
bought a laptop and then a separate keyboard because I was so unproductive
with the laptop keyboard, maybe it is that I have used Jaws for 20 years and
started on the desktop, I don't know and the previous programs I used the
number pad, but switching just has never worked for me.
Oh, well, hope I never have to send a dmp file to you.

Great question about how to reach the keys...
I'll tell you the two ways I do it.

1. I have a desktop keyboard. The first way is to move my right hand to the
NumPad and press and hold the Zero/Insert Key with my thumb.
2. Then with my left thumb on the Windows Key, rather than the ALT Key, I
reach up with left index finger to find the F4 Key and press.

The second option.
Since I always run JAWS with Laptop Layout (even when on a desktop
keyboard), I can press the CapsLock and WinKey with the left hand, and use
my right hand to locate and press the F4 Key.

HTH.

OK, now tell me how I am to reach all these keys at once on a keyboard with
one left Windows key? I have not had the freezing problem but I don't have
large hands, using standard desktop layout. I will probably never need it,
I hope but for heaven sakes how does one manage such reaches.

Hello list,

The dump command (JAWSKey+WindowsKey+F4) will restart JAWS automatically
while it creates a dump file to show what was happening at the time of the
loss of speech. It would be potentially very helpful to contact the Support
department and offer the Dump File with an explanation of what you were
doing when it the loss of speech occurred and how often you are seeing this.

These issues are difficult to track down as they happen randomly and most
certainly have something to do with JAWS interacting with UIA from Windows.
We are making progress on this every day and appreciate your continued
feedback and support in tracking these down.

Regards,
Eric

I think this is the "JAWS dump" keystroke referred to in the original post.
I did not think this keystroke automatically restarted JAWS? I'd better give
it a try. Usually I just kill JAWS with task manager, or nowadays, process
explorer, since task manager got ridiculously slow and basically unusable
lately.

I'm not sure it's been mentioned in this thread, but when I experience
freezing for a few seconds, I press JAWS key+Windows key+F4. This command
almost always restarts JAWS within another few seconds. I believe it helps
to first alt-ab out of the application where the freeze occurred.

George,
If you have jaws 16 on your machine, run jaws 16 for a while and see if the
problem goes away. I m betting on it will.

I must report that I am not experiencing this freezing problem at all here.
In fact 2018 is quite stable on the systems I have it installed and use
every day as a matter of fact. Naturally all systems do not act the same for
various reasons.

I guess it comes down to the question - Is it Windows 10 or JAWS? I think
JAWS.

I am running JAWS 2018 on a Windows 10 Pro machine and experiencing the same
thing regarding freezing. In fact it happened to me the other day when I was
taking a Freedom Scientific certification exam Thinking there is a little
bit of irony there. If you leave the machine alone speech usually returns in
3 or 4 minutes.

Hello:

This week, I'm noticing jaws just randomly freezes on me. I could be reading
an email, surfing the web, writing in word, yelling at the dog, and poof it
would just stop working.

I would do the jaws dump command and then try to bring it back with the
hotkey but it doesn't come back up, unless I reboot. Thoughts?
