Use control semicolon, then hit enter to put in a date.

Did you place a ' in front of your date numbers .if you don't then excel
will think its a ccalculation number and not a date.

It seems everytime I type the date 5/5/2018 in Excel 2018 it keeps showing
5/18 and not 5/5/2018. I deleted the text and wrote it again but it won't
input correctly even if I type 05/05/2018 it keeps happening. 
Any other date I input appears correctly.
