If I was you I would try the check disk with the /R switch first. Reformatting might or might not make the drive work right. It really can't be diagnosed properly by Email. If you are not able to run the check disk with the /R switch from a command line then you can run it from the recovery console with some sighted help if you have SP2. I think you said you are using XP. However, I think you should be able to run the chkdsk /R on your I volume. Give it a try!

The error indicates a problem in the master file table. You might try to run a check disk on the drive. Open a command prompt under accessories. You might have to switch to the folder where the chkdsk.exe file is located (usually c:\windows\system32). Type in CHKDSK i: /r (the switch of /r locates bad sectors and recovers readable information). Also some drives have two power connection types, one for SATA and one for earlier types of drives. Some people have problems when using both connections. If you do the check disk and you have a $MFT write error then you might want to contact Seagate for a diagnostic utility for the master file table.

Looking for a program that works well with JAWS 10 to fix window XP. I am having problem with a external hard drive disappearing after I get message window delayed unable to save file I\$Mft check connection or move file. I need to see if there is a problem with window before calling Seagate for help with the hard drive. the I is the letter assign to the hard drive. Any help will be welcome. Thanks.
