External hard drives are much larger than thumb drives, you seldom see a thumb drive over 128gb, but 3,000 gb external hard drives are available for the same money. Get a usb3.0 drive, even if your computer is old, you'll replace it eventually and the speed is nice.

Hi all.
I'm needing to back up my music and data files and am wondering what kind of
external storage device to get.
I am currently using Windows XP.
Also, would a thumb drive be better than an external hard drive?

Lastly, are there USB powered external drives or must they be powered from a
wall socket?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Pete
