Any idea how I can use VLCPlayer to select a folder and ask it to play the 
files in there at ramdon please?

just go to www.ninite.com.  There you will do a Jaws find for vlc.
Then check the check box and click get installer.  then run twice. If you have 
firefox, save and run from downloads.
