following within my MBean's startService method to no avail (the server did not
abort the startup as hoped) ...

catch (MyException e)
{
MBeanServer server = MBeanServerLocator.locateJBoss();
ObjectName target = new ObjectName("jboss.system:type=Server");
server.invoke(target, "shutdown", new Object[0], new String[0]);
}
