This bug is caused by the awful generics support in Java5.0. Your code also doesnt compile in JDK1.4 cos there's no support to generics. By specs, u cannot redefine only the returning type of a method, but Java5.0 allow u to do that :( Luckily, the 2 runtime methods differs, one is volatile (the redefined), other is concrete (the redefining), allowing us to disting each other.
