I've suddenly remembered - we had this error, or something very much like it.
If you can, I suggest trying one of the recent nightly builds using JVM 1.4 - but be warned that nightly builds are not stable. There are links to the builds on the JMeter web-site. You need to download and unzip the _lib and _bin files in the same place. What hardware are you running on? Is there more than one CPU? Can you send me the full stack trace?
